Pollinator Actions - a new page we're working on... plenty more to come

We have been busy developing wildlife corridors throughout the town by reducing mowing substantially, planting wildflowers on approach roads and verges and by using only pollinator friendly perennials in all of our planting. We promote flowerbeds as opposed to containers and plant pollinator friendly bulbs and wildflower from seed in both autumn and spring. We work to promote similar practices for the general public, schools and childcare centres and we have now developed a major communication strategy for the next three years.
Peter’s Lake, in the very centre of town is a jewel of biodiversity, with trees, grasses, hedgerows and flowers. The area around the lake has been let grow wild with mowing only alongside the paths and picnic areas. Extra biodiversity planting has been established over the past three years and now flourishes. Thousands of allium were added for spring interest.
The Sage Garden. Tidy Towns, with the assistance and advice of the council horticulturalist, took on this community garden in 2021. Originally created years ago with Peace funding and the involvement of Crocus Cancer Care, it  had fallen into disrepair and had become a hub for antisocial behaviour. The garden has been completely opened up and supplemented with extra herbaceous perennials and thousands of pollinator friendly  bulbs were added in the autumn. The allotments section has apple trees, fruit bushes and multi-ethnic painted tyres as raised beds (reflecting the varied nationalities of the volunteers)
